DUMAGUETE CITY — Negros Oriental workers and students get a day off on Friday, October 16, declared a province-wide holiday at the centre of an 11-day Buglasan Festival running October 15 to 25.
It is the busiest day on the festival calendar. Events begin at 6 a.m. with the Buglasan Painitan at Rizal Boulevard and do not stop until the SMB Night stage opens at 9 p.m.
What happens on the holiday
An ecumenical service follows the Painitan at 7 a.m., also at Rizal Boulevard. The Buglasan Civic Military Parade, carrying the Decorated Umbrellas Competition, steps off at 8 a.m. through Dumaguete City streets, with assembly at Rizal Boulevard an hour earlier.
At noon the Lechon Festival Competition takes Freedom Park. The festival's marquee event, the Buglasan Festival of Festivals Streetdancing Competition with the Festival King and Queen, moves through the city streets from 3 p.m., and the Field Presentation and Showdown Competition follows at 6 p.m. at the Gov. Mariano F. Perdices Memorial Coliseum.
The Buglasan VIVA 1 Variety Show closes the programme at Freedom Park at 8 p.m.
Planning around the week
The Negros Oriental Buglasan Trade Fair opens the same afternoon at 2 p.m. at Robinsons Place Dumaguete and runs through October 22, giving anyone who misses the holiday itself a week to visit.
Saturday, October 17 carries the Parada sa Kahayag float competition, which leaves the Provincial Capitol at 5 p.m. for Rizal Boulevard, followed by the Buglasan Pyromusical Competition at 7 p.m.
The Hara sa Negros Oriental 2026 grand competition is set for Friday, October 23 at the Lamberto L. Macias Sports and Cultural Center at 8 p.m., after its pre-competition on opening night.
Opening and closing
The festival opens with a ribbon-cutting at Freedom Park at 5 p.m. on Thursday, October 15, and closes on Sunday, October 25 with awarding ceremonies at the Negros Oriental Convention Center at 11 a.m. and a fireworks display at the Provincial Capitol Grounds at 10 p.m.
This year's theme is "Different Stories. One Aspiration. One Negros Oriental."
Side events run either side of the main week, including the Buglas Camp Fest in Dauin on October 10 and 11, the Teizo Suzuki exhibition "Microcosm in Bowl" at the National Museum of the Philippines–Dumaguete until November 15, and a month-long TikTok dance challenge.
