Silliman University (SU) in Dumaguete City has secured the 10th position in EduRank's latest ranking of the top 100 universities in the Philippines, released in March 2026, affirming its status as the leading higher education institution in the Negros Island Region.

According to EduRank, the rankings are based on a comprehensive evaluation of research performance, non-academic prominence, and alumni influence. The evaluation draws from an extensive dataset that includes 944,000 citations from 84,700 academic publications produced by 229 Philippine universities, as well as recognition of 1,341 notable alumni across the country.

The Dumaguete-based institution stands as the only university from the Negros Island Region to break into the top 10 rankings. SU shares the distinction of being one of only three institutions outside the National Capital Region (NCR) to make the elite list, alongside the University of the Philippines Los Baños, which ranked 5th, and the University of San Carlos in Cebu, which placed 8th.

Silliman University's Global Standing Shows Strong International Presence

On the international stage, Silliman University holds the 1,594th position in Asia and ranks 4,625th globally among universities worldwide. The institution, founded in 1901, maintains a 64% acceptance rate according to EduRank data.

EduRank.org operates as an independent, data-driven ranking platform that evaluates 14,131 universities across 183 countries using publicly available metrics. The platform utilizes what it describes as "the world's largest scholarly papers database with 119,627,370 scientific publications and 3,164,054,493 citations to rank universities across 246 research topics."

The ranking methodology incorporates multiple factors beyond traditional academic metrics. According to the platform, "In the overall rankings we add non-academic prominence and alumni popularity indicators," providing a more comprehensive assessment of institutional impact and influence.

University of the Philippines Diliman Leads National Rankings

The complete top 10 universities in the Philippines according to EduRank's 2026 rankings are dominated by Metro Manila institutions, with the University of the Philippines Diliman claiming the top spot at 312th in Asia and 1,299th globally.

Following UP Diliman, De La Salle University ranked second nationally (400th in Asia, 1,569th globally), while Ateneo de Manila University secured third place (457th in Asia, 1,731st globally). The University of Santo Tomas, founded in 1611 and the oldest university in the rankings, placed fourth with a position of 531st in Asia and 1,951st worldwide.

The University of the Philippines system showed strong representation with three campuses in the top 10: UP Diliman (1st), UP Los Baños (5th), and UP Manila (6th). UP Los Baños achieved the 696th position in Asia and 2,422nd globally, while UP Manila ranked 709th in Asia and 2,462nd worldwide.

Manila-Based Universities Dominate Top Tier Positions

Mapúa University claimed the 7th spot nationally, ranking 1,228th in Asia and 3,792nd globally. The Asian Institute of Management in Makati rounded out the top 10 national rankings ahead of Silliman University, placing 9th with positions of 1,579th in Asia and 4,581st worldwide.

The concentration of top-ranked universities in the National Capital Region reflects the region's continued dominance in Philippine higher education. However, the presence of institutions like Silliman University, UP Los Baños, and the University of San Carlos demonstrates that academic excellence extends beyond Metro Manila.

According to EduRank's analysis, "The best cities to study in the Philippines based on the number of universities and their ranks are Quezon, Manila, Los Baños, and Cebu." Notably, Dumaguete City, home to Silliman University, represents a significant exception to this metropolitan concentration.

Research Performance Drives Institutional Rankings

The EduRank methodology places significant emphasis on research output and impact, analyzing nearly one million citations from academic publications. This focus on scholarly productivity aligns with global trends in university assessment that prioritize research contributions alongside traditional educational metrics.

For Silliman University, the ranking reflects its continued investment in research and academic programs. The institution's position as the sole Negros Island Region representative in the top 10 underscores its regional academic leadership and national significance.

The university's performance in the rankings comes as Philippine higher education institutions face increasing competition both domestically and internationally. With 229 universities included in the EduRank Philippines assessment, securing a top-10 position represents achievement within the top 4.4% of evaluated institutions.

Cost of Education Remains Competitive for Students

EduRank's analysis also provides context for prospective students, noting that the average cost of living for students in the Philippines is $338, plus $39-278 for rent depending on accommodation choices such as dormitories, shared housing, or independent living arrangements.

This cost structure makes Philippine higher education, including institutions like Silliman University, attractive options for both domestic and international students seeking quality education at relatively affordable rates compared to other countries in the region.

The platform advises that prospective students should "always check official university websites for the latest enrollment information," acknowledging that admission requirements and processes may vary significantly between institutions.

Rankings Reflect Broader Educational Excellence Trends

The 2026 EduRank results highlight the continued strength of established Philippine universities while also recognizing the growing importance of research output in institutional assessment. The inclusion of alumni influence as a ranking factor acknowledges the long-term impact of universities on society through their graduates' achievements.

For Silliman University, founded 125 years ago, the top-10 ranking validates its historical commitment to academic excellence and its continuing relevance in contemporary Philippine higher education. The university's motto "Via, Veritas, Vita" (The Way, The Truth, The Life) reflects its foundational Christian values while maintaining academic rigor.

The complete rankings and detailed methodology are accessible through EduRank's website at edurank.org/geo/ph/, providing transparency in the evaluation process and allowing institutions and stakeholders to understand the factors contributing to institutional positions.

As Philippine universities continue to compete for recognition and resources, rankings like those produced by EduRank serve as important benchmarks for institutional performance and provide guidance for students, faculty, and policymakers in making informed decisions about higher education investments and choices.
