PAGASA Hoists Signal 1 as Super Typhoon Rosal Nears Luzon

Packing 185 km/h winds and gusts of 230 km/h, Super Typhoon Rosal has prompted PAGASA to raise Wind Signal No. 1 over parts of Northern and Southern Luzon.

Even while still outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility, Super Typhoon Rosal — carrying sustained winds of 185 kilometres per hour — has already triggered Wind Signal No. 1 warnings across sections of Northern and Southern Luzon, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) announced in Tropical Cyclone Advisory No. 7F, released at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, October 20, 2026.

Location and Movement as of 10:00 AM Tuesday

PAGASA placed the typhoon's centre at approximately 1,385 kilometres east of Central Luzon at coordinates 16.1°N, 135.1°E as of 10:00 AM on October 20. The storm was tracking west-northwestward at a forward speed of 25 kilometres per hour, the agency reported.

Central pressure was recorded at 940 hectopascals, reflecting a very intense tropical cyclone. Gustiness near the eye reached up to 230 km/h, and the typhoon's destructive wind field extended outward as far as 720 kilometres from its centre, according to PAGASA.

Why Signal No. 1 Was Raised Despite PAR Distance

PAGASA explained that although Rosal remained outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility at the time of the advisory, the enormous size of its outer wind field — spanning 720 kilometres from the centre — was sufficient to bring 30 to 60 km/h winds to parts of Luzon within at least 36 hours, meeting the threshold for Wind Signal No. 1.

Residents in areas under the signal may encounter rough seas, strong winds from the typhoon's outer bands, and potential travel disruptions. Disaster risk reduction and management offices (DRRMOs) in Luzon are advised to keep a close watch on the storm's development.

Typhoon's Projected Approach

Travelling west-northwestward at 25 km/h, the typhoon's core was expected to draw progressively closer to the Philippine landmass over the coming days, PAGASA noted. No specific landfall forecast was included in Advisory No. 7F; the agency directed the public to the separately issued Tropical Cyclone Bulletin No. 1 — also released at 11:00 AM Tuesday — for detailed track and timing information.

Advisory No. 7F Is the Final Cyclone Advisory for Rosal

PAGASA confirmed that Advisory No. 7F is the last tropical cyclone advisory to be issued for Rosal. Subsequent updates will be released exclusively through the tropical cyclone bulletin series, which provides more detailed information covering the storm's forecast track, rainfall outlook, and signal area adjustments.

Safety Guidance for the Public and Mariners

PAGASA urged all DRRMOs and the general public to remain alert and to follow guidance from local government units. Residents in Luzon provinces currently under Wind Signal No. 1 are advised to secure loose objects and avoid unnecessary travel to coastal and mountainous areas.

Mariners and fishing vessel operators near the signal areas were cautioned about rough sea conditions typically associated with the outer wind field of a typhoon of Rosal's intensity.

Classification and Naming

Under standard meteorological classification, a typhoon earns "super typhoon" status when maximum sustained winds reach at least 150 km/h — equivalent to a Category 4 or stronger system on the Saffir-Simpson scale. At 185 km/h sustained winds, Rosal comfortably exceeded that benchmark at the time of the advisory.

PAGASA assigned the local name "Rosal" upon the storm affecting the Philippine Area of Responsibility, consistent with the agency's standard naming protocol. The storm's international designation, Champi, is the name used by the Japan Meteorological Agency and other regional meteorological bodies.

According to PAGASA, Tropical Cyclone Advisory No. 7F was prepared by forecaster MJB and checked by RPG at the agency's Weather and Flood Forecasting Centre in Quezon City.
