More than ₱69 million worth of marijuana plants were destroyed by the Philippine National Police (PNP) in the Cordillera Administrative Region during a weeklong series of eradication operations from March 16 to 22, 2026. The operations targeted illegal drug sources in the region, aiming to curb the spread and production of marijuana.
Joint operatives conducted 24 separate marijuana eradication operations across Benguet province. These operations resulted in the destruction and confiscation of a substantial amount of marijuana, including fully grown plants, seedlings, and dried leaves.
Over 72,000 Marijuana Plants Destroyed in Benguet Operations
According to PNP reports, the operations led to the destruction of approximately 72,900 fully grown marijuana plants. Authorities also confiscated 420 seedlings and over 454,000 grams of dried marijuana leaves, stalks, and fruiting tops ready for distribution.
The estimated total value of the confiscated and destroyed illegal drugs is ₱69,172,200.00. The PNP highlighted the success of these operations as a significant blow to illegal drug operations in the Cordillera region.
PNP Chief Commends Operating Units for Eradication Success
PNP Chief, Police General Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr., lauded the operating units involved in the weeklong operations for their dedication and effectiveness in combating illegal drug activities. He emphasized the PNP's commitment to eradicating illegal drug sources and preventing their spread.
"Hindi natin titigilan ang laban kontra ilegal na droga. Tuloy-tuloy ang ating operasyon, lalo na sa mga lugar na ginagamit sa pagtatanim at produksyon. Sa tulong ng komunidad, mas mapapalakas pa natin ang kampanyang ito,” PGEN Nartatez said in a statement.
Eradication Efforts Part of National Anti-Drug Campaign
Beyond the eradication of marijuana plants, the PNP remains focused on preventing the distribution of illegal drugs nationwide. The weeklong accomplishment is part of the PNP’s intensified campaign against illegal drugs, which aligns with the national government’s direction under President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr..
These efforts fall under the PNP’s Focused Agenda under Enhanced Managing Police Operations. This agenda aims to strengthen sustained and intelligence-driven actions against illegal drugs across the country.
Continuous Operations Planned to Dismantle Drug Sources
The PNP assured the public that similar operations will continue in other identified areas known for illegal drug cultivation and production. The goal is to dismantle these sources and ensure the safety and security of communities nationwide.
The ongoing campaign is aligned with the PNP’s push for a "Bagong PNP para sa Bagong Pilipinas: Serbisyong Mabilis, Tapat at Nararamdaman," which translates to "A New PNP for a New Philippines: Fast, Honest, and Felt Service."
Cordillera Region a Known Source of Marijuana Cultivation
The Cordillera Administrative Region, particularly provinces like Benguet, is known for its mountainous terrain and favorable climate, making it a suitable location for marijuana cultivation. The PNP has historically conducted numerous operations in the region to combat this illegal activity.
The remote and rugged landscape of the Cordillera poses challenges to law enforcement efforts. However, the PNP has been working with local communities to gather intelligence and conduct effective eradication operations, as seen in the recent weeklong campaign.
Community Support Key to Sustained Anti-Drug Efforts
The PNP has emphasized the importance of community involvement in combating illegal drugs. Cooperation from local residents in identifying marijuana plantations and reporting suspicious activities is crucial for the success of eradication efforts.
General Nartatez highlighted that with the help of the community, the campaign against illegal drugs can be further strengthened. The PNP encourages citizens to report any information related to illegal drug activities to their local police stations.
Public Health and Safety Concerns Related to Marijuana Use
While the PNP focuses on eradicating marijuana sources, it is important to recognize the public health and safety concerns associated with marijuana use. The consumption of marijuana can have adverse effects on mental and physical health, particularly among young people.
Prolonged marijuana use can lead to addiction, impaired cognitive function, and an increased risk of respiratory problems. It is also associated with mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, and psychosis. Public awareness campaigns are essential to educate people about the potential harms of marijuana use.
Penalties for Marijuana Cultivation and Possession
Under Philippine law, the cultivation, possession, and distribution of marijuana are illegal and subject to severe penalties. Republic Act No. 9165, also known as the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002, outlines the penalties for various drug-related offenses, including marijuana.
Individuals caught cultivating marijuana can face lengthy prison sentences and substantial fines, depending on the quantity of marijuana involved. The law aims to deter individuals from engaging in illegal drug activities and to protect the public from the harmful effects of drugs.
PNP to Continue Intelligence-Driven Operations Nationwide
The PNP is committed to continuing its intelligence-driven operations against illegal drugs across the country. By gathering information, analyzing trends, and working with local communities, the PNP aims to dismantle drug networks and prevent the spread of illegal substances.
The PNP’s efforts are focused on ensuring a safer and more secure environment for all Filipinos. The ongoing campaign against illegal drugs is a key priority for the PNP, and the organization remains dedicated to achieving its goals.
