The Philippine Army's 39th Infantry (Smash Eagle) Battalion in Barangay Asbang, Matanao, Davao del Sur now has a new administration building and covered court, formally turned over on October 24, 2026, during a ribbon-cutting ceremony led by senior military and civilian officials.

Key Officials Lead the Inauguration

Major General Alvin Luzon, Commander of the 10th Infantry (Agila) Division, presided over the inauguration alongside Davao del Sur Lone District Representative Hon. John Tracy Cagas, according to a press release issued by the 10th Infantry Division and received via Viber on October 25, 2026.

Brigadier General Apollo Jun Lamaton, Commander of the 1002nd Infantry (Bagwis) Brigade, and Lieutenant Colonel Hector Estolas, the battalion's Commanding Officer, were also in attendance, the 10ID press release stated.

The programme included a Talk to Troops session, the mustering of the 1101st Ready Reserve Infantry Battalion, and a ceremonial tree-planting activity, according to the same release.

Lawmaker Acknowledges Soldiers' Sacrifices

Representative Cagas spoke about the security challenges the municipality had previously faced and paid tribute to Army personnel who served in the area. He expressed hope that the 39th IB's continued presence would help maintain peace and contribute to local development.

"Ang mga sundalo sa 39IB, atong mga amigo ug igsoon. Kung atong hunahunaon, daghan sa ilang mga opisyal ug sundalo ang nagsakripisyo sa ilang kinabuhi aron mapanalipdan ang Barangay Asbang ug ang Munisipyo sa Matanao," Cagas said.

The Cebuano statement translates to: the soldiers of the 39IB are friends and brothers, and many of their officers and troops gave their lives to protect Barangay Asbang and the Municipality of Matanao.

Division Commander Sets High Standard for the Battalion

Maj. Gen. Luzon urged the battalion to make full use of the new structures and ensure their proper upkeep, describing the facilities as essential to operational readiness, discipline, and quality of service. He also acknowledged partner government agencies for their support of the construction project, the 10ID press release noted.

"A strong camp must produce a stronger unit. A stronger unit must deliver better service. And better service must result in greater security and lasting peace for our people," Luzon said, as quoted in the 10ID press release.

What the New Structures Will Be Used For

The 10th Infantry Division said the administration building will house command and control functions, planning, coordination, and mission preparation activities. The covered court, meanwhile, is designated for physical fitness training, unit exercises, and community engagement programmes.

Both structures are also expected to serve as mobilisation venues for operations and disaster response efforts across Davao del Sur, according to the press release.

Part of Broader Territorial Defense Readiness Efforts

The 10ID said the new facilities support the division's preparations for Territorial Defense Operations, particularly in strengthening unit capabilities, integrating the Reserve Force, and improving personnel readiness and mobilisation. The division described the inauguration as part of its continuing commitment to sustaining partnerships with local government units and other stakeholders in its area of responsibility.
