Residents across wide stretches of Mindanao and the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) felt the ground shake on the evening of June 26, 2026, after a magnitude 6.5 tectonic earthquake struck offshore south of the Davao Occidental municipality of Sarangani. Ground motion reached as far north as Bukidnon and as far west as Zamboanga City, Basilan, and Sulu, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology of the Department of Science and Technology (PHIVOLCS-DOST).

Earthquake Details

PHIVOLCS-DOST recorded the quake at exactly 7:34:35 in the evening, Philippine Standard Time (PHT). The epicenter was placed 70 kilometers south-southwest of Balut Island in Sarangani, Davao Occidental, at geographic coordinates 4.82°N, 125.21°E. The earthquake's focus was at a depth of 38 kilometers beneath the earth's surface, and PHIVOLCS-DOST classified the event as tectonic in origin — caused by natural stress release along fault structures in the earth's crust.

The information presented here is drawn from Earthquake Information No. 3, which PHIVOLCS-DOST officially released on June 27, 2026, at 11:50 AM PHT, accompanied by an epicentral map. The agency stated that this bulletin would be the final one unless new or additional data warrants a follow-up release.

By the Numbers

  • Magnitude: 6.5
  • Depth of focus: 38 kilometers
  • Epicenter distance from Balut Island: 70 kilometers south-southwest
  • Time of occurrence: 7:34:35 PM PHT, June 26, 2026
  • Bulletin issued: June 27, 2026, 11:50 AM PHT (Earthquake Information No. 3)
  • Highest recorded intensity level: Intensity V (PHIVOLCS Earthquake Intensity Scale)

Intensity Levels Across Affected Areas

PHIVOLCS-DOST uses the PHIVOLCS Earthquake Intensity Scale (PEIS) to quantify how strongly shaking was perceived at each location. Both reported observations and instrumental readings were used to map the distribution of ground motion across the region.

Intensity V — Strong

The most intense shaking — Intensity V, where nearly all persons feel the tremor and some may flee outdoors — was observed in several communities in southern Mindanao. These include Kiamba, Malapatan, Malungon, and Alabel in Sarangani; the City of General Santos; Lake Sebu and T'boli in South Cotabato; and Palimbang in Sultan Kudarat. Instrumental readings from PHIVOLCS-DOST confirmed Intensity V in Kiamba and Malapatan (Sarangani) and T'boli (South Cotabato).

Intensity IV — Moderately Strong

At Intensity IV, most people feel the shaking and hanging objects sway noticeably. PHIVOLCS-DOST reported Intensity IV in Glan, Maasim, and Maitum in Sarangani; Don Marcelino and Santa Maria in Davao Occidental; the City of Davao; Matanao in Davao del Sur; and the City of Koronadal, Polomolok, and Tupi in South Cotabato. Instrumentally confirmed Intensity IV readings included the City of General Santos and multiple Sarangani municipalities, as well as Tupi and Koronadal in South Cotabato.

Intensity III — Weak to Moderate

Intensity III shaking spread across a considerably broader zone. According to PHIVOLCS-DOST, this level was felt in the City of Davao; Matanao in Davao del Sur; Tampakan, Norala, Banga, Tantangan, Santo Niño, and Surallah in South Cotabato; the City of Kidapawan and Makilala in Cotabato; and the City of Tacurong, President Quirino, Lebak, Bagumbayan, Lutayan, and Esperanza in Sultan Kudarat. Shaking at this level also reached the City of Zamboanga, and the Cities of Lamitan and Isabela in Basilan. Instrumental records confirmed Intensity III in Santa Maria (Davao Occidental), several South Cotabato towns, Kidapawan (Cotabato), and parts of Sultan Kudarat.

Intensity II — Slightly Felt

Intensity II — perceptible mainly to persons at rest — was reported in Monkayo, Mawab, Nabunturan, and Maragusan in Davao de Oro; the City of Digos in Davao del Sur; M'lang, Magpet, and Antipas in Cotabato; Columbio in Sultan Kudarat; Datu Blah T. Sinsuat, Datu Odin Sinsuat, and Sultan Kudarat municipality in Maguindanao del Norte; Kapatagan in Lanao del Norte; and Jolo in Sulu. Instrumental readings at Intensity II were logged in Magsaysay (Davao del Sur), Norala (South Cotabato), Isulan and Kalamansig (Sultan Kudarat), M'lang and Magpet (Cotabato), and Columbio (Sultan Kudarat).

Intensity I — Scarcely Perceptible

The outermost boundary of detectable ground motion reached Intensity I — registered mainly by seismographic instruments or felt only by very sensitive individuals — in Alamada and Carmen in Cotabato; Senator Ninoy Aquino in Sultan Kudarat; and San Fernando and Kalilangan in Bukidnon. PHIVOLCS-DOST's instruments also recorded Intensity I in President Roxas and Carmen, both in Cotabato.

No Damage Projected; Aftershocks Anticipated

Despite the wide geographic reach of the shaking, PHIVOLCS-DOST assessed that no damage is expected from this earthquake event. The agency nonetheless reminded the public that aftershocks are anticipated in the wake of any significant seismic event and advised residents to remain alert. Official updates from PHIVOLCS-DOST can be monitored at phivolcs.dost.gov.ph.

Why This Matters

A magnitude 6.5 earthquake is considered strong enough to cause structural damage in poorly built structures, even if PHIVOLCS-DOST did not project harm in this instance — underscoring both the seismic resilience built into monitoring systems and the importance of early public information. The broad reach of shaking from Bukidnon down to Sulu highlights how a single offshore event can affect millions of residents across multiple provinces and regions simultaneously. With aftershocks expected, PHIVOLCS-DOST's continued monitoring will be critical in ensuring communities remain informed and prepared in the hours and days that follow.
