Sunday afternoon brought a jolt of alarm across Eastern Visayas as a magnitude 6.0 earthquake shook Eastern Samar, with the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS-DOST) confirming that structural damage is to be expected and that aftershocks will likely follow in the coming hours or days.
When and Where the Earthquake Hit
The tremor struck at exactly 2:09:46 in the afternoon on May 4, 2026, Philippine Standard Time. PHIVOLCS pinpointed the epicenter at coordinates 11.82°N, 125.61°E — approximately 18 kilometers north of the municipality of San Julian in Eastern Samar. The earthquake originated from tectonic activity at a focal depth of 57 kilometers beneath the surface.
Strongest Shaking Near the Epicenter
Communities closest to the epicenter bore the most intense ground motion. San Julian and Salcedo, both in Eastern Samar, recorded Intensity VI on the PHIVOLCS Earthquake Intensity Scale — classified as "very strong" shaking. At this level, poorly constructed buildings and structures are vulnerable to slight but potentially significant damage.
Slightly less severe but still considerable shaking at Intensity V, described as "strong," was reported across three Eastern Samar municipalities: Can-Avid, Sulat, and Taft. Shaking at this intensity is strong enough to be felt by all residents and can cause hanging objects to swing noticeably.
Intensity IV Felt Across Multiple Provinces
A wide swath of Eastern Visayas and neighboring provinces experienced Intensity IV, or "moderately strong" shaking. Within Eastern Samar alone, at least 16 localities registered this level, including Arteche, Balangiga, Balangkayan, Borongan City, Dolores, General Macarthur, Giporlos, Hernani, Jipapad, Lawaan, Llorente, Maslog, Maydolong, Oras, Quinapondan, and San Policarpo.
Intensity IV shaking also extended into Leyte province, affecting Tacloban City alongside municipalities such as Alangalang, Burauen, Carigara, Dagami, Dulag, Julita, Palo, Pastrana, Santa Fe, Tabontabon, Tanauan, and Tolosa.
In Northern Samar, the same intensity level was recorded in Catubig, Gamay, Laoang, Lapinig, Mapanas, Mondragon, Palapag, Pambujan, Rosario, San Roque, and Silvino Lobos. Across Samar province, Calbayog City, Catbalogan City, and 15 additional municipalities also reported Intensity IV. Even Loreto in Dinagat Islands registered the tremor at this intensity.
Tremor Felt as Far as Sorsogon and Bohol
Weaker but perceptible shaking at Intensity III reached areas well beyond Eastern Visayas. Sorsogon province recorded this level in Casiguran and Juban, while Duero in Bohol also reported Intensity III. All municipalities in Biliran province felt the tremor at this same intensity. Additional areas across Eastern Samar, large portions of Leyte including Ormoc City, Northern Samar, Samar, Southern Leyte, and Dinagat Islands were also among those reporting Intensity III.
Even fainter shaking at Intensity II was detected in parts of Masbate, Cebu, and Southern Leyte. The weakest reading of Intensity I was recorded in select Cebu areas, including Cebu City and Lapu-Lapu City — underscoring how broadly the earthquake's energy radiated outward from Eastern Samar.
What PHIVOLCS Instruments Recorded
Beyond the reported felt intensities, PHIVOLCS seismographic stations independently recorded instrumental Intensity V readings in Can-Avid in Eastern Samar, in Alangalang and Dulag in Leyte, and in Catbalogan City and Gandara in Samar province. Several Leyte municipalities and Northern Samar localities registered instrumental Intensity IV. The instruments also picked up lower-level readings as far away as the Bicol provinces of Albay, Camarines Sur, and Catanduanes — a testament to how far-reaching the seismic event was.
PHIVOLCS Warns of Damage and Aftershocks
PHIVOLCS has explicitly stated that damage is anticipated from this earthquake, especially in and around the areas where Intensity VI was recorded. Residents in San Julian, Salcedo, and surrounding communities are urged to check their homes and buildings for any signs of structural compromise, such as cracks in walls, foundations, or ceilings.
The agency further warns that aftershocks are expected to follow the main seismic event. Those living in areas that experienced Intensity IV and above are advised to remain vigilant and to be prepared to move quickly to safe locations should stronger shaking occur again. Authorities remind the public not to re-enter damaged structures until they have been assessed and cleared by appropriate officials.
Official Bulletin Issued Sunday Evening
PHIVOLCS released its official earthquake information bulletin at 6:18 in the evening of May 4, 2026. The agency noted that this would serve as the sole bulletin for this event unless new or updated information becomes available. An epicentral map showing the precise location of the earthquake has also been made publicly accessible by the agency.
For the latest updates and official advisories regarding this earthquake and any subsequent aftershocks, the public is encouraged to monitor the PHIVOLCS-DOST website directly at phivolcs.dost.gov.ph. Residents in affected communities should also keep in touch with their local government units for any evacuation instructions or damage assessment updates.
