CATBALOGAN CITY, Samar – Two members of the Communist Terrorist Group (CTG) were killed and several firearms recovered following a brief but intense firefight with government forces in the remote areas of Samar on April 24, 2026.
According to Captain Christopher B. Tataro, Division Public Affairs Officer of the 8th Infantry Division, troops from the 46th Infantry Battalion engaged remnants of the Yakal Platoon under the Sub-Regional Committee Browser of the Eastern Visayas Regional Party Committee (EVRPC) in a seven-minute encounter in Barangay Caulayanan, Motiong, Samar.
The clash occurred in the mountainous hinterlands of the barangay, an area known for sporadic communist rebel activity. Government forces were conducting routine security operations when they encountered the armed group.
Weapons and Casualties Recovered
Following the firefight, Philippine Army troops recovered significant evidence of the encounter. An M14 rifle and a caliber .45 pistol were seized from the site, along with the bodies of two unidentified CTG members who were abandoned by their retreating comrades.
The recovery of these high-powered firearms represents a notable reduction in the armed capability of communist rebels operating in the region. Military officials noted that the abandonment of fallen comrades reflects the increasingly desperate situation faced by remaining CTG units.
The 46th Infantry Battalion, operating under the 8th Infantry (Stormtroopers) Division, has been conducting sustained operations against communist rebel groups throughout Eastern Visayas as part of the military's counter-insurgency campaign.
Strategic Impact on Rebel Operations
The 8th Infantry Division emphasized that this latest encounter represents another significant blow to the already weakened Communist Terrorist Group structure in Eastern Visayas. Military commanders view the engagement as evidence of the sustained pressure being applied against remaining rebel units.
"The neutralization of these armed individuals and the recovery of their firearms further degrade the operational capability of the CTG in Samar. This reflects the sustained pressure being applied by our troops on the ground," the division stated in its official report.
According to military analysis, the continued series of armed encounters demonstrates the CTG's diminishing organizational strength. Rebel units are increasingly forced to engage in short, sporadic clashes while struggling to maintain unit cohesion and command structure.
The brief nature of the seven-minute firefight suggests that remaining CTG members lack the capability for sustained engagement with government forces, instead relying on hit-and-run tactics before retreating to remote jungle areas.
Abandonment Exposes Internal Weakness
Military officials highlighted the significance of the rebels' decision to abandon their fallen comrades during the retreat. This action contradicts the ideological principles typically espoused by communist organizations regarding solidarity and collective responsibility.
"Despite their attempts to evade government forces, our troops remain relentless in pursuing these armed groups. Their abandonment of their fallen comrades once again exposes their disregard for human life within their ranks," the 8th Infantry Division statement noted.
This pattern of abandoning casualties has been observed in multiple recent encounters between government forces and communist rebels throughout the Eastern Visayas region, suggesting a breakdown in traditional rebel unit discipline and morale.
The incident in Motiong follows similar engagements in other parts of Samar where government forces have successfully engaged communist rebel units, resulting in weapons seizures and significant disruption to rebel operations.
Surrender Appeals and Integration Programs
The 8th Infantry Division renewed its appeal for remaining CTG members to surrender and participate in government reintegration programs. The Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program (E-CLIP) provides structured assistance and opportunities for former rebels seeking to return to civilian life.
"We urge the remaining members of the CTG to lay down their arms and reunite with their families. The government is ready to support their reintegration into society," military officials stated.
The E-CLIP program offers former rebels access to livelihood training, educational opportunities, financial assistance, and protective services for those who choose to abandon armed struggle. The program has successfully facilitated the surrender and reintegration of hundreds of former communist rebels across the Philippines.
Military commanders emphasized that the government's approach combines sustained pressure through military operations with genuine opportunities for peaceful reintegration, providing alternatives to continued armed conflict.
Ongoing Security Operations
Focused military operations continue throughout the area as government forces work to track down the CTG members who fled during the April 24 encounter. The 46th Infantry Battalion has intensified patrols and established additional checkpoints to prevent the remaining rebels from regrouping or threatening local communities.
The mountainous terrain of Motiong and surrounding areas provides natural concealment for fleeing rebels, requiring sustained and methodical search operations by government forces. Local community cooperation has proven essential in providing intelligence about rebel movements and activities.
Military officials assured residents that operations are being conducted with careful attention to civilian safety and minimal disruption to daily activities. Community leaders have been briefed on security measures and encouraged to report any suspicious activities.
The successful engagement represents part of broader counter-insurgency efforts across Eastern Visayas, where government forces continue to apply sustained pressure against remaining communist rebel units while working to address underlying community concerns that contribute to insurgency support.
