Philippine and American naval forces have completed another round of coordinated sea exercises in the West Philippine Sea, with the 16th iteration of the Bilateral Maritime Cooperative Activity (MCA) wrapping up on October 14, 2026 — marking another milestone in the two countries' ongoing defense partnership.

The one-day drill brought together assets from the Philippine Navy, the Philippine Coast Guard, and the United States Navy under the framework of the US Pacific Command (USPACOM), with activities focused on boosting interoperability between the allied forces.

Ships and Aircraft Deployed

According to the Armed Forces of the Philippines, Manila fielded the Philippine Navy frigate BRP Miguel Malvar (FFG-06) — supported by an AW109 helicopter — along with the Philippine Coast Guard's BRP Melchora Aquino (MRRV-9702).

Washington, for its part, contributed the USS Warrior (MCM-10), a mine countermeasures vessel, to the exercise. The AFP reported that participating units carried out Passing Honors and a Photo Exercise during the activity.

Statement from Camp Aguinaldo

In a press release issued from Camp Aguinaldo in Quezon City, the AFP said the 16th MCA "underscores the Philippines' and the United States' continued commitment to strengthening defense cooperation, enhancing maritime capabilities, and supporting a free, open, and secure Indo-Pacific."

The AFP said the activity strengthened maritime interoperability and operational coordination between the two forces.

By the Numbers

  • 16th — iteration of the Bilateral Maritime Cooperative Activity series
  • 3 — total naval and coast guard vessels deployed by both sides
  • 1 — AW109 helicopter deployed alongside BRP Miguel Malvar
  • October 14, 2026 — date the exercise was conducted in the West Philippine Sea

Why This Matters

The AFP stated that the continued conduct of the MCA series advances both nations' shared goal of maintaining a free, open, and secure Indo-Pacific. With this 16th iteration, the activity continues as a regular part of the two forces' maritime cooperation in the West Philippine Sea.
