The Philippine Military Academy (PMA) has launched preparations for its Bessang Pass Challenge 2026, a grueling two-day intercompany competition that will pit all eight companies of the Cadet Corps Armed Forces of the Philippines (CCAFP) against each other on October 10 and 11, 2026.

The process formally began on October 8, 2026, when the eight cadet companies commenced the Order of March at Fort General Gregorio H. Del Pilar in Baguio City, according to the PMA.

A Broad Range of Military Disciplines on the Line

Upper class cadets will contend across 13 structured events designed to measure the full range of military competencies, the PMA announced in its official release. The complete slate of events includes:

  • Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC)
  • Communications
  • Weapons
  • Grenade Assault Course
  • Functional Fitness Test
  • Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) operations
  • Indoor Obstacle Course
  • Pistol Marksmanship
  • Rucksack March
  • Land Navigation
  • Night Navigation
  • Crucible
  • Rifle Marksmanship

The events span combat skills, physical endurance, navigation, marksmanship, and specialized operations, covering both individual performance and the ability to function under prolonged mental and physical stress.

Company-Level Cohesion Is a Scored Component

The Bessang Pass Challenge is not solely an individual competition. The PMA stated that each company is evaluated as a collective unit, with scores reflecting how well cadets coordinate under pressure, execute tactical decisions, and complete assigned tasks as an organized team.

This emphasis on organizational performance places unit cohesion on equal footing with personal military readiness, making the challenge a test of leadership and group discipline as much as individual skill.

Competition Framed as a Tool for Developing Future AFP Officers

In its official statement, the PMA described the Bessang Pass Challenge as an intentional officer development mechanism. The Academy said the competition aims to produce graduates with "the competence, physical readiness, and character necessary to lead personnel and accomplish missions across the Armed Forces of the Philippines."

According to the PMA, the intercompany rivalry format adds pressure that mirrors real operational conditions, reinforcing the standards cadets will be expected to meet upon commissioning into the AFP.

By the Numbers

  • 8 — cadet companies participating in the Bessang Pass Challenge 2026
  • 13 — total competition events across combat, fitness, and navigation disciplines
  • 2 — competition days (October 10–11, 2026)
  • October 8, 2026 — date the Order of March commenced at Fort Del Pilar, Baguio City

Why This Matters

The PMA has described the Bessang Pass Challenge as one of its primary intercompany competitions for evaluating cadet readiness ahead of commissioning. With events ranging from CBRN operations and night navigation to rifle marksmanship and casualty care, the competition measures the full spectrum of skills the AFP expects of its future frontline officers. Results factor into assessments of each company's training quality and collective discipline within the Cadet Corps.
