Major General Michael G. Samson, Commander of the 3rd Infantry (Spearhead) Division, has conferred the Wounded Personnel Medal on a soldier who sustained injuries during a recent clash with remnants of the Communist Terrorist Group (CTG) in Toboso, Negros Occidental.
The recognition ceremony took place on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, honoring the soldier's bravery after he was wounded in combat operations against insurgent forces. The soldier sustained two gunshot wounds to both arms during the encounter and is currently in stable condition.
According to the 3rd Infantry Division, the medal presentation was attended by senior military officials including Brigadier General Ted B. Dumosmog, Commander of the 303rd Infantry Brigade, and Lieutenant Colonel Eric B. Alfonso, Commander of the 79th Infantry Battalion.
Series of Successful Military Operations
The awarding comes amid a series of successful encounters that resulted in significant victories against insurgent forces in the Negros Island Region. Military operations led to the neutralization of 19 members of the dismantled Northern Negros Front (NNF), Komiteng Rehiyon-Negros.
These operations also resulted in the seizure of multiple assault rifles, dealing a significant blow to the communist terrorist group's capabilities in the region. The Northern Negros Front has been identified as one of the remaining active units of the New People's Army operating in Negros Island.
The encounters demonstrate the continued pressure being applied by government forces against insurgent groups that have long operated in mountainous and remote areas of Negros Island.
Division Commander Emphasizes Commitment to Peace
In his message during the medal presentation, Major General Samson emphasized the significance of the soldier's sacrifice and the broader mission of the Armed Forces of the Philippines in the region.
"This medal is not only a recognition of his sacrifice but also a symbol of the courage and dedication of every soldier who stands in defense of our people," Major General Samson stated during the ceremony.
The 3ID Commander further highlighted how the wounded soldier's resilience serves as inspiration for continued military operations. "His resilience inspires us to continue our mission of securing lasting peace in Negros Island Region," Samson added.
Strategic Importance of Negros Operations
The 3rd Infantry Division has been at the forefront of counter-insurgency operations across the Negros Island Region, which encompasses both Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental provinces. The division's area of responsibility includes some of the country's most challenging terrain where insurgent groups have historically maintained presence.
Military analysts note that the successful operations against the Northern Negros Front represent a continuation of the government's focused approach to dismantling remaining communist terrorist groups in the region. The neutralization of 19 insurgents marks one of the most significant single operational success in recent months.
The seizure of multiple assault rifles during these operations also represents a substantial reduction in the firepower available to remaining insurgent forces in the area.
Recognition of Military Sacrifice
The Wounded Personnel Medal represents one of the military's formal recognitions for soldiers who sustain injuries in the line of duty while serving their country. The decoration acknowledges both the physical sacrifice made by service members and their continued commitment to duty despite personal risk.
According to military protocols, the medal is awarded to personnel who are wounded or injured as a direct result of enemy action while engaged in military operations. The recognition serves both to honor individual sacrifice and to demonstrate institutional support for wounded warriors.
The presence of senior military officials from the brigade and battalion levels at the ceremony underscores the importance placed on recognizing individual acts of heroism and sacrifice within the military hierarchy.
Ongoing Security Situation in Negros Island
The recent operations in Toboso represent part of broader security efforts across Negros Island Region, where government forces continue to work toward eliminating the remaining presence of communist terrorist groups.
Military sources indicate that while significant progress has been made in reducing insurgent capabilities, operations continue to target remaining pockets of resistance. The dismantling of the Northern Negros Front leadership structure has been identified as a key objective in ongoing security operations.
Local government units across Negros Island have been working closely with military forces to support peace and development efforts in areas previously affected by insurgent activity.
Support for Wounded Service Members
The 3rd Infantry Division has emphasized its commitment to providing comprehensive support for service members who sustain injuries during military operations. This includes immediate medical care, ongoing rehabilitation support, and formal recognition of their service and sacrifice.
Military medical facilities across the region have been equipped to handle combat-related injuries, ensuring that wounded personnel receive appropriate care. The soldier who received the medal is reportedly recovering well from his injuries and is expected to make a full recovery.
The division's approach to supporting wounded warriors includes both immediate medical intervention and long-term care planning to ensure service members can continue their military careers or successfully transition to civilian life as appropriate.
