Indonesia is grappling with its most severe wildfire season in years, with approximately 285,000 hectares of land scorched by early August. This immense devastation, which nearly doubled the area burned in the first half of the year, has already surpassed the scale of destruction seen during the El Niño events of 2019 and 2023, signaling an accelerating environmental catastrophe across the archipelago.
The sprawling infernos across the islands of Sumatra and Borneo have plunged vast regions into a suffocating haze, inflicting immediate and severe health consequences on millions, disrupting essential services, and rekindling long-standing diplomatic tensions with neighboring Southeast Asian nations as toxic smoke drifts across borders.
Satellite data compiled by the ASEAN Specialized Meteorological Centre (ASMC) revealed a dramatic rise in hotspots, with more than 52 detected in Sumatra and 264 in Borneo as of Monday. The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) reported nearly 49,000 hectares burned across six priority provinces by early August, with West Kalimantan alone accounting for over 38,000 hectares, highlighting the localized intensity of the crisis.
The human toll of this environmental catastrophe is immediate and stark. Residents across affected regions describe a choking atmosphere, with emergency room visits for respiratory symptoms in West Kalimantan skyrocketing tenfold since July to approximately 5,000 per week. "Each breath feels like smoking a cigarette," lamented Suwadi, a resident of Indonesian Borneo, capturing the dire health reality faced by millions.
Visibility has plummeted to just a single meter in some areas of Kalimantan, severely disrupting road traffic and delaying flights. Schools in numerous affected districts have been suspended, with parents increasingly pressing for a shift to online learning to shield children from the noxious fumes. In Palembang, South Sumatra, where the highest number of hotspots has been recorded nationwide, some 3,000 residents gathered to perform "salat istisqa," a special Islamic prayer for rain, seeking spiritual solace amid the crisis.
At the heart of Indonesia’s perennial fire problem lies the practice of "slash and burn" agriculture. This low-cost method of clearing land is predominantly employed for establishing and expanding palm oil plantations, an industry in which Indonesia stands as the world's largest producer. The conversion of peatlands, naturally carbon-rich and highly flammable when drained, exacerbates the intensity and persistence of these fires.
This year, the situation has been compounded by a powerful "super" El Niño phenomenon, which is intensifying the blazes and prolonging the dry season. Experts forecast the El Niño to peak in September, pushing arid conditions well into October. With significant rainfall appearing unlikely before November, the worst of the crisis may still be ahead, threatening to extend the suffering across the region.
Indonesian authorities have mounted a substantial response. The government has deployed more than 24,000 ground firefighters to actively battle the flames across Sumatra and Borneo. Aerial operations have been intensified, with the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) deploying 30 helicopters for crucial water bombing and aerial patrols. Cloud seeding efforts, aimed at inducing rainfall, have also been reactivated across target areas in Kalimantan.
President Prabowo Subianto has personally visited fire-affected provinces, including Central Kalimantan, Riau, and South Sumatra, ordering additional troops and equipment to bolster firefighting efforts. Concurrently, law enforcement has intensified its pursuit of those responsible for igniting the fires, with 72 individuals arrested on suspicion of arson, a number that reportedly reached 185 by Monday.
Investigations are also underway into four companies in West Kalimantan alleged to have used fire for land clearing. If found culpable, these corporations could face severe sanctions, including the potential revocation of their operating licenses. Authorities have already sealed off at least 42 companies, including some with Singaporean and Malaysian affiliations, suspected of involvement in the fire-setting.
The transboundary nature of the haze has, predictably, strained regional relations. Thick smoke plumes have drifted across borders, engulfing neighboring Malaysia and leading to "very unhealthy" and "unhealthy" air quality readings, particularly in Sarawak and Melaka. This forced the closure of nearly 600 schools in Sarawak, impacting approximately 200,000 students. Singapore, too, remains on high alert, with its authorities closely monitoring the fires for potential haze incursions.
The ASEAN Specialized Meteorological Centre has consequently elevated its alert level to Level 2 for the southern ASEAN region, indicating an increased risk of transboundary haze due to escalating hotspot activity and dense smoke plumes observed over consecutive days. Malaysia and Brunei have already agreed to raise the issue at the ASEAN level, with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim discussing possible measures with Brunei Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah during a recent visit.
This regional push for action comes despite earlier assertions by Indonesia's environment minister, Siti Nurbaya Bakar, who, while acknowledging haze within Sumatra and Borneo, initially stated there was "no transboundary haze." However, the tangible impact on neighboring countries and the regional alerts paint a different picture, underscoring the interconnectedness of Southeast Asia's environment and the urgent need for collaborative action.
The recurring nature of these catastrophic fires is a stark reminder of the region's vulnerability to climate patterns and unsustainable land management practices. Indonesia's annual battle with wildfires, often linked to agricultural expansion, has repeatedly triggered similar haze crises, particularly during El Niño years. The current scale, surpassing previous El Niño events, underscores a deepening environmental and public health challenge.
