For the first time in its history, the Philippine Military Academy's Bessang Pass Warrior's Challenge opened its doors to an outside institution — with ten teams competing across 13 combat-skill events over two days at Fort General Gregorio H. del Pilar in Baguio City last October 10–11, 2026.

According to a PMA press release dated October 15, 2026, the biennial challenge drew the most competitive field in recent memory, featuring all eight companies of the Cadet Corps Armed Forces of the Philippines (CCAFP), the elite CCAFP Team Dagohoy, and — for the first time — a guest squad from the Philippine Army Officer Candidate School (PAOCS).

Echo, Delta, and Charlie Lead the Official Rankings

Among the eight regular CCAFP companies vying for official honors, Echo Company finished at the top of the standings. Delta Company came in second, while Charlie Company rounded out the podium in third place, the PMA said.

CCAFP Team Dagohoy — the Academy's elite unit that previously represented PMA at the U.S. Military Academy's Sandhurst Military Skills Competition — posted the strongest overall performance across all events. The PMA noted, however, that Dagohoy's results were excluded from the official rankings because the team competed in guest status rather than as a regular participating unit.

Thirteen Events Testing Combat Readiness

The PMA said the challenge was structured around 13 distinct events designed to assess both individual proficiency and collective unit cohesion. Competitors faced tests in Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC), Communications, Weapons, Grenade Assault Course, Functional Fitness (Expert Physical Fitness Assessment), Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) defense, Obstacle Course, Pistol Marksmanship, Ruck March, Land Navigation, Night Navigation, Rifle Marksmanship, and The Crucible.

Photos released by the PMA Cadet Media Team captured cadets hauling an inflatable boat, moving through terrain during night navigation, firing at the marksmanship range, donning protective masks for the CBRN event, and relaying signals during the communications exercise.

PAOCS Joins as Guest for the First Time

Previous editions of the Bessang Pass Warrior's Challenge were limited exclusively to PMA cadet companies. The PMA described the debut appearance of the Officer Candidate School team as a move toward broader inter-institutional engagement across AFP officer-producing schools.

The Academy announced it intends to hold the challenge again in 2027 and plans to invite additional military training institutions to participate, with the goal of further expanding the competition's reach and interoperability objectives, according to the PMA.

Named After a Defining World War II Battle

The challenge takes its name from the Battle of Bessang Pass, one of the most consequential engagements involving Filipino troops during World War II. The PMA said Filipino forces overcame difficult terrain and heavy enemy resistance to secure victory at Bessang Pass in 1945.

The Academy said the competition is designed to carry forward the values demonstrated in that battle — courage, discipline, teamwork, and strategic thinking — and apply them to a modern training environment that tests cadets' endurance, adaptability, and leadership under pressure.

A Competition Built for More Than Rankings

The PMA emphasized that while competitive standings generated energy across all ten teams, the event is designed to serve broader purposes: forging institutional ties, exchanging best practices in military skills training, and building camaraderie among the AFP's future commissioned officers.

Participants were evaluated not only as individuals — on physical conditioning, weapons handling, navigation, and medical response — but also as coordinated units whose collective determination was tested across every one of the 13 events.

By the Numbers

  • October 10–11, 2026 — dates of the two-day challenge at Fort del Pilar, Baguio City
  • 10 teams — total competing units, including one guest team
  • 13 events — covering combat skills, marksmanship, navigation, and fitness
  • 8 companies — regular CCAFP units counted in the official rankings
  • 1945 — year Filipino forces secured victory at the Battle of Bessang Pass

Why This Matters

The PMA said the challenge serves as a key benchmark for military readiness and unit cohesion among its cadets, directly shaping the skills of the AFP's next generation of commissioned officers. The first-time inclusion of PAOCS signals an institutional direction toward joint training among different AFP officer-producing schools — one the Academy says it plans to expand further in 2027. Grounded in a defining World War II victory by Filipino soldiers, the competition also carries the historical and cultural values the Academy aims to instill in its corps.
