DUMAGUETE CITY, Negros Oriental — Filipinos have only six days left to register as voters or update their voter registration records ahead of the 2026 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE), with the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) setting a firm deadline of May 18, 2026 for most areas of the country.

As of Tuesday, May 12, 2026, COMELEC is urging all eligible Filipinos — including first-time voters, those who have transferred residences, those seeking reactivation of registration, and those with corrections to existing records — to complete their applications before the deadline to avoid last-minute congestion at election offices nationwide.

The 2026 BSKE is scheduled to be held on November 2, 2026, and the outcome of voter registration in the coming days will determine who is eligible to vote in that election.

Registration Period Runs Through May 18 at Local COMELEC Offices

According to COMELEC, the voter registration period for the 2026 BSKE officially began on October 20, 2025, and will close on May 18, 2026. Registration is conducted daily from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at local Offices of the Election Officer (OEO) as well as at approved satellite and mall registration sites across the country.

COMELEC offices are open on Saturdays and holidays during the registration period, unless otherwise declared by the commission. Voters are advised to verify whether their nearest COMELEC office or satellite site is operating on a given date, particularly on declared public holidays.

The commission has consistently reminded the public not to wait until the final days of the registration period, citing historically high foot traffic and processing delays that tend to occur as deadlines approach.

Registered Voters May Still Update Names Due to Marriage or Court Order

One of the key reminders issued by COMELEC ahead of the May 18 deadline concerns registered voters who have undergone a legal change of name — whether due to marriage or a court order.

According to COMELEC, affected voters may still update their voter registration records by filing an application for change of name at their local Office of the Election Officer before the registration period closes. This process is separate from new voter registration but must be completed within the same registration window ending May 18.

Voters who have recently married or whose names have been legally amended through judicial proceedings are encouraged to act promptly, as failure to update records before the deadline may result in discrepancies between their official identification documents and their voter registration data on election day.

BARMM Registration Already Closed as of March 31, 2026

Voters residing in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) should note that the voter registration period for their region ended earlier, on March 31, 2026, according to a COMELEC advisory. Residents of BARMM who missed that regional deadline are no longer eligible to register or update records for the 2026 BSKE under the current COMELEC calendar.

The earlier closure for BARMM reflects the distinct administrative timeline set by COMELEC for the autonomous region, which operates under a separate electoral calendar for certain registration activities.

List of Accepted Valid Identification Documents for Registration

COMELEC has provided a comprehensive list of identification documents that qualified applicants must bring when appearing at registration sites. The following IDs are accepted:

  • PhilSys National ID
  • Postal ID
  • Persons with Disability (PWD) ID
  • Student ID or library card signed by school authorities
  • Senior Citizen ID
  • Land Transportation Office (LTO) driver's license or student permit
  • National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) clearance
  • Philippine passport
  • SSS, GSIS, or UMID card
  • Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) ID
  • Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) license
  • National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP) certificate of confirmation
  • Barangay ID or barangay certification with photo
  • Other government-issued valid IDs

Applicants who appear at registration sites without any of the listed valid IDs may not be processed. COMELEC has urged voters to prepare their documents in advance to ensure a smooth and successful registration transaction.

Who Must Register or Update Records Before May 18

COMELEC has identified several categories of voters who must transact before the May 18 deadline. These include:

  • New voters — Filipinos who have reached voting age (18 years old) and have never been registered
  • Transfer applicants — Registered voters who have moved to a new city or municipality and need to transfer their registration to their current place of residence
  • Reactivation applicants — Voters whose registrations were deactivated, such as those who failed to vote in two consecutive elections
  • Correction of entries — Voters who need to correct errors in their existing voter registration records
  • Name change applicants — Voters who have legally changed their names due to marriage or court order

According to COMELEC, all of the above transactions must be completed on or before May 18, 2026 to be eligible to vote in the November 2, 2026 BSKE.

2026 BSKE Set for November 2, Elections to Cover All Barangays Nationwide

The 2026 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections will be held simultaneously across all barangays in the Philippines on November 2, 2026. The BSKE will determine the leadership of the country's most local unit of government — the barangay — as well as the composition of Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) councils, which represent the youth sector at the community level.

Barangay officials to be elected include the Barangay Captain and members of the Sangguniang Barangay, while SK elections will choose the SK Chairperson and SK Councilors. These positions serve a term defined under current law and are distinct from national and local government posts covered by the regular election cycle.

COMELEC has released its calendar of activities for the 2026 BSKE, of which the May 18 voter registration deadline is among the most immediately pressing milestones for the general public.

COMELEC Urges Early Action to Avoid Last-Minute Rush

With only six days remaining in the registration period as of May 12, 2026, COMELEC has repeated its call for eligible voters to visit their nearest election office or satellite registration site at the earliest opportunity rather than waiting until the final day.

Election officers across the country are expected to experience a surge in applicants in the coming days as the May 18 deadline draws near. Voters who appear early in the remaining days of the registration window are likely to encounter shorter queues and faster processing times.

For the locations of approved satellite and mall registration sites, voters may contact their local Office of the Election Officer or refer to official COMELEC announcements on verified government platforms and the commission's official website and social media channels.

The COMELEC has emphasized that no extensions to the May 18 deadline have been announced, and voters who fail to register or update their records in time will not be eligible to participate in the November 2, 2026 BSKE.
