Facing the sea from a hillside on Da Nang's Sơn Trà Peninsula, the white Lady Buddha (Quan Thế Âm) of Linh Ứng Pagoda is one of the city's most striking sights.
- 67 m tall — close to a 30-storey building
- Stands on a 35-m-wide lotus base
- 17 floors inside, 21 Buddha statues per floor
- Pagoda built 2004–2010; free entry
Inside the Lady Buddha
The statue reaches 67 metres. Its lotus base measures 35 metres across, and the interior has 17 floors, with 21 Buddha statues on every floor.
Why the beach is called Bãi Bụt
According to legend, a Buddha statue washed up on the beach below more than a hundred years ago. Fishermen built a shrine for it, and the shore came to be called Bãi Bụt, "the land of Buddha." The Lady Buddha still looks out to sea, over the fishermen who work those waters.
Getting there
Work on the pagoda started in 2004 and finished in 2010. There is no entrance fee, and the site is roughly 10 km from the city centre.
