A teenage girl was pulled to safety from Marcelo Fernan Bridge in Cebu on Monday, October 13, 2026, after a CCTV monitoring operator spotted her in distress and immediately alerted responding police units — an incident the Philippine National Police (PNP) has since highlighted as an example of surveillance infrastructure serving a life-saving role.

The PNP Public Information Office said in a statement that duty personnel assigned to Metro Cebu's closed-circuit television network detected the 14-year-old Grade 8 student in danger and wasted no time in notifying officers on the ground.

Maritime Unit Responds, Student Taken to Safety

Officers from Headquarters Regional Maritime Unit 7 (HRMU 7), under the command of Patrolman Eddie Anthony G. Corañes, reached the bridge and escorted the student away from danger, according to the PNP.

The student, who attends a national high school in Lapu-Lapu City, was brought to the HRMU 7 office via patrol car for documentation, a medical examination, and appropriate disposition, the PNP said. Consistent with protections afforded to minors, her identity was not disclosed.

PNP Chief Commends Quick Response

PNP Chief Police General Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr. publicly praised the officers involved, saying their swift action reflected the vigilance expected of every member of the force.

"Our officers must recognize the urgency of every situation where a life is at risk. Their decisive response in this incident demonstrates the responsibility and vigilance expected of every police officer," Nartatez said, as quoted in the PNP statement.

In a separate message delivered in Filipino, Nartatez stressed that young people dealing with serious difficulties need understanding, guidance, and support, and that it is vital for them to know that someone is always willing to listen and extend help.

Rescue Linked to PNP Focused Agenda

The PNP said the successful rescue aligns with its Focused Agenda, particularly its components on enhanced police operations and community support, adding that the episode underscores the role of CCTV infrastructure in enabling rapid emergency response across urban areas.
