CATBALOGAN CITY, Samar – The 8th Infantry Division of the Philippine Army has reported significant gains in its ongoing operations against Communist Terrorist Group (CTG) elements, with one rebel neutralized and multiple high-powered firearms seized during a series of encounters across Samar Island from April 16-17, 2026.
The operations, conducted by various infantry battalions under the 8th Infantry Division, resulted in armed engagements in Northern Samar and Samar provinces as part of intensified security operations against remaining CTG forces in Eastern Visayas.
According to the military report issued from Camp Vicente Lukban, the encounters demonstrate the continued pressure being applied against Communist insurgents operating in the region through sustained, intelligence-driven operations.
Northern Samar Encounter Claims Rebel Life
The first engagement occurred on April 16, 2026, when troops from the 19th Infantry Battalion encountered members of Squad 1, Sub-Regional Guerrilla Unit under the Sub-Regional Committee Emporium of the Eastern Visayas Regional Party Committee in the hinterlands of Silvino Lobos, Northern Samar.
A more significant clash took place the following day when soldiers from the 46th Infantry Battalion engaged the Yakal Platoon, also under the Eastern Visayas Regional Party Committee, in the remote areas of Barangay Salvacion, Jiabong, Samar.
During the April 17 firefight, government forces recovered one M4 Bushmaster rifle and the body of a rebel identified by the alias "John Paul," described as a member of the Regional Security Force of the Eastern Visayas Regional Party Committee. The fallen insurgent was reportedly abandoned by his retreating comrades during the encounter.
The recovered remains have been transported to Faith Funeral Homes in Catbalogan City, where they await identification and proper disposition by family members, according to military officials.
Weapons Cache Discovery in Sta. Rita
In a separate operation on the same day, troops from the 63rd Infantry Battalion made a significant weapons discovery in Barangay San Onion, Sta. Rita, Samar. The cache contained seven firearms of various calibers, including two .357 caliber pistols, three .38 caliber revolvers, and two .22 caliber firearms.
The discovery of the weapons cache suggests the presence of rebel supply lines and storage facilities in the area, which the military views as evidence of ongoing insurgent activities requiring continued security operations.
Military officials noted that the weapons seizure disrupts the operational capacity of Communist forces in the region and demonstrates the effectiveness of intelligence gathering and community cooperation in identifying rebel assets.
8ID Cites Declining Insurgent Capabilities
The 8th Infantry Division characterized these encounters as part of a broader pattern showing the weakening state of Communist insurgent forces in Eastern Visayas. Military commanders emphasized that the incidents demonstrate what they describe as the futility of continuing armed struggle against government forces.
According to the division's assessment, CTG members are being systematically weakened, isolated, and forced to abandon both comrades and resources in the face of sustained military pressure. The military describes the situation as reflecting "a movement in decline, with diminishing capability and eroding support from the communities they once sought to influence."
The 8th Infantry Division stressed that relentless, intelligence-driven operations have placed insurgent forces at a significant disadvantage, forcing them to operate in increasingly difficult conditions with reduced local support.
Division officials noted that the abandonment of the fallen rebel by his comrades exemplifies the deteriorating cohesion and morale within insurgent ranks, suggesting internal organizational problems beyond military pressure.
Government Calls for Surrender
While emphasizing military success, the 8th Infantry Division has renewed calls for remaining Communist insurgents to surrender and participate in government reintegration programs. Military officials stressed that the government maintains its commitment to offering peaceful alternatives to armed resistance.
The division warned that continued armed resistance would only result in further loss of life and unnecessary suffering, not only for CTG members but also for their families. Officials emphasized that government reintegration programs remain available, offering opportunities for former insurgents to build peaceful and productive lives.
Military commanders underscored the government's resolve and capability in protecting citizens and defending democratic institutions while extending opportunities for peaceful resolution to those willing to abandon armed struggle.
Sustained Operations Continue
The 8th Infantry Division reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining intensified operations against remaining insurgent forces while simultaneously offering peaceful alternatives to those choosing to surrender. The dual approach aims to ensure long-term security and stability for communities throughout Eastern Visayas.
Military officials indicated that operations would continue with the same intensity, utilizing intelligence-driven tactics that have proven effective in recent encounters. The division emphasized its dedication to protecting civilian populations while systematically degrading insurgent capabilities.
The recent operations represent part of broader counterinsurgency efforts across the Philippines, where government forces continue engaging Communist rebels in various regions. The Eastern Visayas front has seen consistent military pressure as part of national strategy to end the decades-long insurgency.
Community safety and security remain paramount concerns as military operations continue, with officials emphasizing their commitment to minimizing civilian impact while effectively targeting insurgent forces and infrastructure.
